What are Lumineers Made of?

Many patients with teeth that are severely chipped, stained, broken or otherwise damaged may choose dental veneers to improve their smiles. Dental veneers are wafer-thin shells that fit over the fronts of teeth to enhance their appearance. If you are a candidate for dental veneers, your dentist may offer you several choices. One option is Lumineers, a specific brand of dental veneers.

Lumineers are made of ultra-thin Cerinate porcelain, which is stronger and more long-lasting than many other types of porcelain, which means these porcelain dental veneers can be made much thinner than conventional dental veneers. Lumineers can be designed to be as thin as a contact lens, or just .2 to .3 millimeters thick or less than 1/64 of an inch. Traditional porcelain dental veneers are typically twice as thick as Lumineers and may be even thicker in some cases. Thin veneers such as Lumineers offer their patients many benefits, like a special no-prep placement that allows your dentist to apply the dental veneer with no anesthetic, no drilling, no extensive preparation of the enamel and no post-procedure sensitivity. In fact, they can typically be applied directly over your own teeth.

When traditional dental veneers are placed, your dentist will need to shape your teeth in order to make room for the dental veneers. If the teeth are not properly shaped, the result can be too large, uncomfortable and increase your risk of gum irritation and gum disease. This type of preparation can also help your dentist create specific results. For example, if a patient is using dental veneers to correct minor misalignments or deep intrinsic stains, the teeth may need preparation for better results.

However, many individuals prefer to avoid shots and drilling. Others may have minor aesthetic flaws and just want a Hollywood-perfect smile. Lumineers can add that perfect finishing touch without extensively altering the natural teeth. The lack of preparation is one of the most popular features of Lumineers. Although these are long-lasting dental veneers that can provide up to 20 years of beauty, they are considered reversible contrary to traditional dental veneers, which permanently change the natural structure of the teeth.

In some situations, Lumineers may also need a small amount of preparation. Teeth that have dark or substantial stains may require a small amount of preparation in order to ensure the best results. Not all patients are candidates for Lumineers or the no-prep application. Talk to your dentist about your options or to learn if Lumineers are right for you.
