Walking Tours in Bucharest

The best way to know a city and its people is not by whizzing by in a streetcar or bus, or by guided tour, but by walking. Your schedule is your own. Surroundings can be admired and dallied over, and people met. As any seasoned traveller can tell you the secrets to a city lie in the people. Not only can secrets be found but potential friends met as well. Bucharest is no exception. A walking tour starting at any of the Bucharest hotels, within reason, is only a step away.

This 500 – year – old city, young by European standards, with a wealth of architecture in which much is sadly missing due to World War II and an earthquake in 1970. The country’s last dictator had much of the historic core gutted after the 1970 quake to make room for his unwise projects but there’s enough historical treasures remaining to warrant a walk. And nothing says a walk has to proceed as planned. Meander at will; explore side streets and what they have to offer, tease out their secrets. Who knows, you might learn of a nightclub that escapes unnoticed in brochures.

Walking, of course, demands food and drink. So take a break and sit yourself down at an outdoor patio that wasn’t allowed under communism. A glass of beer, a little food, and a nice warm sun fosters social interaction. It’s a wonderful time to learn about the city’s culture, how the other half lives, whether they are young or old. And the best way to strike up a conversation is by showing a genuine interest in learning the culture. That seems to be a constant regardless of the culture.

Walking tours can start from almost anywhere, within reason. For a luxury hotel Bucharest offers numerous options, and one can be chosen with walks in mind as part of trip planning before arriving in the city.

The walk might need modification, it might not be finished that day, and before weariness overtakes a return to one of the luxury hotels Bucharest offers will be necessary. What fun!
