Upholstery For Everybody

People are different and it is natural they have individual preferences about everything. Which lead me to write this article about different types of upholstery materials and their basic characteristics. We can divide them into two main categories depending on the material they’re made from – natural and synthetic. It took me almost entire day to choose the upholstery for my couch and to be honest with you it was really hard to tell the difference between natural and synthetic.

I even touched silk which is the most expensive and demanding of all and it is not such a big deal. I really expected more and I was really disappointing especially since I touched much softer fabric which was synthetic. So naturally my question to the sales manager was why should I pay more for natural fabric when it is cheaper to have synthetic ones? At that point I was thinking of purchasing leather and then it became interesting.

It turns out that leather is in a completely different category, but we’ll talk about it later on – now back on the fabrics and the choice between natural and synthetic fibers. As you well know most natural fabrics are moisture sensitive and when a stain occurs it will be hard to remove. Moreover you have to be careful with the cleaning solutions so you don’t damage the fabric. I did some research and found out that the majority of people prefer synthetic fabric for upholstery because it is cheaper.

Some even think it is more durable, but the salesman ensured me that if you take proper care for the natural one it is equally endurable. There are also some mixed fabrics composed by natural and synthetic fibres which are probably the best option if you have pets and/or kids. They combine the best qualities of the two materials and are relatively easy to clean and maintain. I told you about natural fabric now a few words about synthetic ones.

They have some resistance form stains and liquid, also they won’t fade if exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time. This doesn’t mean you have to be sloppy and don’t treat the stains as soon as possible. The same applies for the vacuuming – make sure you do it at least twice a week and don’t neglect hard to reach places, because dirt tends to build up right there. I told you that leather is a completely different category but it is also divided into synthetic and natural.

Genuine leather is the most expensive type of upholstery you can choose, but if you purchase high quality one it can outlive you. Extremely durable and has a specific touch you’ll either love it or hate it, there is no middle option. If you’re into leather let me give you a piece of advice – don’t under any circumstances buy suede. This is probably the less durable and demanding upholstery fabrics you’ll find.

It is moisture sensitive and the only way to clean it is using a special suede brush – stains don’t come out and there isn’t a dry cleaning method to remove them. To sum up everything cotton is the best form the natural fabrics, it is soft and can be cleaned relatively easy. The winner form the synthetic ones is microfiber which is a wonderful material I think everyone has such cloth at home. For the leather – full grain only, it will last and to clean it you need wet wipes.

If the stain is tough saddle soap will do the trick, the special about leather is it has to be conditioned form time to time. Well I hope the article was informative and useful for those who are in a search of new furniture. Keep in mind that it is a good idea to hire professional cleaners once or twice a year for deep cleaning. They’ll also determine the condition of the furniture and tell you which is the best method for removing stains and dirt.
