Top 5 Things to See and Do in the Hyde Park/Covent Garden Area

The area around and between Hyde Park and the Covent Garden district is filled with dozens of fascinating sights and attractions – many of them free or inexpensive, and all withing walking distance. Here is a list of my top 5 picks in the area:
Covent Garden Piazza – Great destination for food or gift shopping, street entertainment, pubs or just people-watching. The tradition of street performance goes back at least 3 centuries – you can still catch Punch and Judy performances, which are just as entertaining as they were in the 17th century.

Hyde Park and Speaker’s Corner – Hyde Park is perfect for a picnic or a lazy afternoon stroll. On Sunday mornings, you can hear self-styled orators expounding on a variety of subjects at Speaker’s Corner – a time-honoured bastion of free speech.

Natural History Museum – Want to keep the kids enthralled for a full day without spending money? Take them to the Natural History Museum. Dinosaur skeletons and much, much more – you’ll be entertained too, I promise. Free admission (except for special exhibits).

Mayfair District – Okay, no one ever said that Mayfair is inexpensive, but there’s plenty to see and do that doesn’t cost anything, especially if you enjoy window-shopping. Exclusive shops, expensive hotels and posh homes make the area well worth exploring, if for no other reason than to see how the rich and famous live…

Chinatown – At the southern edge of the Soho district lies London’s Chinatown. Unique shops and good, inexpensive food make this area a worthwhile destination. Get a real taste of the Orient in the center of London.

All these sights and attractions are within walking distance of hotels near Covent Garden or any Hyde Park hotel and none will cost you very much money to explore. Who says London has to be expensive?
