Tips for Healthy Gums

When it comes to oral care, some patients focus on their teeth. Drinking plenty of water eather than sugary sodas or sweetened tea can also help to preserve your gum health. Water washes away bacteria and food particles without adding to the problem by depositing extra sugars on the teeth and gums. Sodas, sweetened tea, juice, and other beverages that have sugar, on the other hand, contribute to bacteria growth by adding sugars to the mouth.

Avoiding smoking is also important for the health of your gums. Smoking is hard on the mouth in several ways, but when it comes to gum health, smoking creates an additional problem by making the mouth more dry. Having plenty of saliva is important for killing and washing away bacteria, and when the saliva is not present, the bacteria have the ideal environment to grow and create problems with the gums and the teeth.
