Theatreland and London’s West End

The West End of London is one of the most popular districts in the city, for tourists and locals alike. The district offers everything, shopping, dining, street entertainment, luxury accommodations, and last – but certainly not least – the West End is the home of Theatreland, the world-famous grouping of theatres providing top-level dramas, comedies and musicals.

Theatreland contains some 40 venues entertaining as many as 13 million theatre fans per year. Theatres in the West End have set and broken longevity and attendance records for decades now. The longest continuously-running drama in the history of the theatre, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, has been performed over for over 58 years, since it’s opening in 1952, and the Andrew Lloyd Weber-penned musical, Les Miserables, is the world’s longest running musical, and is currently in it’s 25th year. Many first-time visitors to London and Theatreland are surprised and delighted to find out that ticket prices to the shows are often quite a bit less than comparable performances on Broadway.

The West End is also the home to Covent Garden, with its scores of shops and stalls selling almost anything imaginable, from fruits and vegetables to handbags and jewelry. The vibrant street scene and nightlife around Covent Garden (with over 60 pubs and bars, and 13 theatres), make it a very popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The Royal Opera House is another one of Covent Garden’s notable landmarks.

The West End is home to several world-class luxury hotels, as well. The Hilton Waldorf London Hotel is the perfect example – it features 5-star service and all the amenities you expect from such a legendary name. Afternoon tea and scones, Sunday dances in the elegant surroundings of Palm Court, sumptuous dining in the Homage Grand Salon, or a swim in the indoor pool are just a few of the special touches which make the Waldorf hotel the best West End accommodation choice.
