Protests at the Cairngorms

A campaign protest group have set up base against a wind farm that is planned to be built in the Highlands. Whilst ministers suggest that many establishments, such as a shopping area or Scottish highland hotel will benefit from the scheme, many have arrived to argue against the plans.

The group, named the Save the Monadhliath Mountains Group, are fighting against the 31-turbine Allt Duine wind farm which will be located on the outskirts of the Cairngorms National Park. Their main argument is that it will be ‘devastating’ for the landscape and natural scenery in the area. They have already gathered at the Highland Council headquarters, whilst council members were discussing plans, to start off their fight but will expand further in the coming weeks. At the meeting, councillors could not decide on whether to go with the plans or not and so they will be making a visit to the area at one point early next year.

Councillors are currently in favour of the plans and will be heading off to the Scottish Government to confirm the scheme. The campaign members are hoping to make a real difference before it even reaches this stage by aiming to send out a clear message that the wind farm is a step too far in the area.

The real reason behind the anger, however, is the fact that this wind farm is actually one of eleven that already exist or are being planned in the Cairngorms National Park area. The fact that there will be so many in the area will severely affect the Highland’s unspoilt landscape, according to campaigners. The campaign hopes for a major public backing as they move their protests to the Government.

If you would like to join the fight, book into a Cairngorms hotel and join the rally. More details are given on the campaign’s website and Facebook pages. Join the debate and encounter the thin line between doing what is right and what is easy in the Cairngorms.
