Protecting Eyes Against Harmful Sun Rays

When summertime is upon us, residents of California like nothing more than to be enjoying the great outdoors. Whether you prefer playing in the surf or hiking one of the region’s many trails, you have to protect your eyes from the sun to prevent future problems with your vision.

The best way to prevent damage to your eyes is to wear protecting eye wear when you are outdoors or when you are driving. Look for sunglasses that are suitable for the activity you are engaging in. For instance, polarized lenses are designed specifically to reduce glare, which is helpful for driving or for water activities. Manufacturers even make special goggles with sun protection for swimmers.

No matter which type of sunglasses you select, look for lenses that block both UVA and UVB light. These rays are the most dangerous in the light spectrum since they can cause eyelid cancers, cataracts, and skin cancers. UV rays also contribute to macular degeneration and can cause wrinkles on the face and around the eyes.

Another important aspect of the sunglasses you choose is comfort. Try on several pairs of sunglasses to find a pair that fits your face well. Ideally, the lenses should cover your whole field of vision so that you eyes are always protected. Some optometrists recommend wraparound sunglasses for everyday purposes since they offer complete protection.

If you use your sunglasses for sports or if they will receive heavy wear, opt for shatterproof and scratch resistant lenses. These lenses not only protect the sunglasses from damage, but they also protect your eyes from broken glass in case a ball hits the sunglasses or another accident occurs.

Another way to protect your eyes is to wear a hat. Look for a hat with a 3 inch or wider brim. Whether you prefer a baseball cap or a floppy sun hat, the brim can shield your eyes and your face from the worst of the sun’s rays. Many sports offer head wear that is specially meant for this purpose, so ask your sporting goods representative for assistance when you purchase your gear.

In addition to wearing sunglasses and a hat, it is important to wear sunscreen. Look for a sunscreen that is specifically made for the face and is safe to use around the eyes. Wearing sunscreen on your face will help to protect the delicate tissues around your eyes, preventing wrinkles and protecting your face from the ravages of skin cancer.
