Mayfair Area and its Cultural Sites

London has 32 boroughs and many areas within them. One of the most interesting is within the City of Westminster and it is called Mayfair. The area is mainly commercial but you can visit there many cultural sites, too.

The district is home of some of the most luxurious restaurants, clubs and Mayfair hotels. It is not a coincidence that this is the area with the highest rents in the world. Its boundaries are Hyde Park to the west, Regent Street to the east, Piccadilly to the south and Oxford Street to the north. Mayfair is the place where you can find different corporate headquarters, business and embassy offices.

Along with the office buildings, there are some interesting cultural places in Mayfair such as the Handel House Museum. It displays works and facts about the life of the popular German composer George Frederic Handel. His house, built in 1712 is the place where he composed the biggest part of his famous works. It was restored so to look the same way as it looked when the composer was alive and then opened in 2001.

Another cultural place in Mayfair is the public garden Mount Street Gardens which was created in 1889. The land where the gardens are situated was a former burial ground of St George’s Church which was later turned into a workhouse. The garden has different kind of trees but those that prevail are the London Plane trees you can see everywhere throughout the city. You can see there some other species like Australian Silver Wattle and Canary Islands Date Palm.

When you go to London, you should definitely visit the Royal Academy of Arts. It is an art institution on Piccadilly whose main aim is to promote new visual arts using exhibitions and debate. The academy is not financially supported by the crown and it receives its incomes from the its trading. There are many other interesting things to see in the great Mayfair area including some of the most luxurious restaurants and Mayfair hotels which are perfect for one unforgettable vacation.
