Magazines: What you Need to Know

Magazines are a good way to promote just about anything.  It can also give good information to a person who prefers to do readings that are simplified, summarized or bulleted.  Here are a few things to get you by as you go with magazine printing:

1. Find a name that sticks to anyone’s head
Is the name you are thinking of memorable? Apart from asking yourself you may also need to ask other people for their opinion, ask them if they like the sound and if they would be able to easily remember the name.  Make the name sticky, professional but sticky.

2. Fun features
Have something enticing to make people continually interested to read your magazines.  Perhaps you could add a contact the editor page or a quiz and who ever gives the best answer gets a reward feature.  Make it fun and invigorating.

3. Writings / Writers
Find people who will do the writing.  You do not have to do all the work you know.  Test their capabilities and make sure that before you agree to let them write for you, they should have at least have written other articles or have an impeccably perfect command of the language.

4. Advertisers
Go find yourself advertisers that are willing to advertise on your magazine.  Remember that they are taking a risk with you since you are just starting so make sure you give them a good discount.

5. Great Shots
Your pictures must be a good reflection of you – professional.  So if your magazine is about business you would want it to be more serious than the usual but if your magazine is about travel then by all means show them all the fun the world has to offer.  It is best to pick shots that are moving (e.g. man walking, woman smelling flowers or couple looking on to the horizon)

6. Great layout
Should art not be your friend then go look for a good designer that has lots of experience with magazine layout. You can try to make a rough draft but leave the final layout to the professional so it would look polished and grand especially for your first print.

7. Color magic
Colors can easily interchange from page to page or when pictures are placed at certain areas.  It is best to pick a general color and find all possible colors that you think could go well with that main color.  It can be totally opposite like black and white but as everyone knows those two colors also belong together.

8. Binding
There are many ways you can bind your magazines, ask your local printers what they offer and what would go best with your magazine considering its number of pages and its paper type.  Binding Techniques are either: sewing, stapling, gluing or a combination of one or two.

9. Paper type
Pick the thicker papers because they are the sturdier and stronger ones.  This is highly important specially for the front and back covers so they can hold the entire magazine in place.

10. Gloss
Gloss it all.  The covered or laminated they all are the better.  Your pages should be protected and given more time, since the magazines will be handed out from distributers, couriers or various people so make everything stronger and sturdier so it can reach more readers.

The better magazines are the ones that have a solid name and can easily identify with a crowd or a group of people.   Make sure you have everything in place before you say go to magazine printing company.
