Madeira Big Game Fishing

If you have ever had the dream (what male hasn’t?) of hooking and landing a big game fish, such as an Atlantic Blue Marlin weighing around 1000 pounds, then Madeira Island may be the perfect holiday destination for you. Madeira is the largest island in a Portuguese archipelago that lies about 400 km north of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

Every year, between May and October, anglers descend on Madeira for a chance to catch one of the leviathans that roam the mid-Atlantic. Besides Blue Marlin, there are Bluefin Tuna, Big Eye Tuna, Wahoo and a variety of other game fish. After a decline due to the El Nino effect and commercial over-fishing, there has been a recovery in recent years and there is now, once again, a fairly good chance of catching a Blue Marlin off the coast of Madeira.

There are many charter boats available for group hire and there are opportunities for individuals to join in on a group charter to split the cost of a day’s fishing. You don’t need any experience or equipment for fishing Madeira, but it’s not exactly inexpensive. It generally costs around 1000 euros to charter a boat for a day’s fishing, and there’s no guarantee you will catch anything.

However, if you split the cost among 4 people and you do manage to land a big game fish (even some of the smaller varieties put up a serious fight), the cost is fairly reasonable. In fact, if you manage to land a 1000 pound Blue Marlin, you’ll be able to brag about it for a lifetime, so 250 euros begins to seem a paltry outlay of cash for such a priceless experience.

Madeira is a beautiful place to visit anyway, and you should be able to talk the missus into it by showing her some of the tourism sites offering the tempting cuisine and the legendary Madeira wine. The beaches and accommodations are world-class and as of yet, Madeira has not been over-developed in terms of tourism, but it’s a matter of time, so you may want to book your fishing Madeira adventure soon.

Wherever you go this summer, be sure to use the park and fly Edinburgh services available at Edinburgh airport hotels such as the Hilton. Edinburgh park and fly packages minimize the hassle of departure and will help get your Madeira fishing trip off to a brilliant start.
