How to Clean Upholstered Furniture

Regular cleaning helps preserving upholstered furniture presentable and also prolongs the durability of the fabrics. By taking care of your upholstery on a regular basis, you not only keep it looking clean but also eliminate the germs and bacteria that tend to hide into the fabrics, making your home healthier for you, your family and your pets. Here are a few simple tips on how to wash upholstered furniture properly no matter if it is a sofa, couch or chair.
Instructions

  1. Remove any pillows and cushions that might be on the particular furniture.
  2. Use a handled dusting brush to brush the upholstery in order to loosen the dust that has accumulated on it. Brush the pillows and cushions as well.
  3. Vacuum all surfaces of the furniture to pick up the loosened dust. Do not forget to vacuum the back and the area beneath the cushions including the cushions on both sides.
  4. Mix ¼ cup of laundry detergent with 1 cup of warm water. You can use liquid dish detergent instead of laundry detergent as well. Stir the ingredients using an electric mixer until the mixture takes a form of whipped cream.
  5. Test a small area of the furniture for fading by rubbing a small amount of the mixture into it using a cloth. Allow the area to dry, then examine it for discolouration or shrinkage. If there is nothing wrong with the fabric, proceed to the next step, otherwise, consider hiring professionals, such as cleaners Archway, to clean the furniture instead of you.
  6. Use a cloth to rub the mixture on the furniture. Work on sections for better results. While rubbing, you will notice the dirt to come out of the upholstery into the suds. Use a scraper to remove the dirty suds and continue rubbing the area with the cleaning solution until no more dirt is lifted from the furniture.
  7. Use a damp cloth to rinse the area, then proceed with the treatment of the other areas of the furniture.
  8. Once the entire furniture is cleaned, including the cushions, let it dry overnight.
