How to Clean Gutters

Maintaining clean gutters is essential to keep a home in good condition. If you neglect your gutters, this can lead to trapped water into them, which can cause considerable damage to your roof and walls. To prevent that damage, it is advisable to clean your gutters regularly. Here are a few tips that can help you to do that job easier.

  1. Use a ladder to gain access to the roof. Make sure that the ladder is not lean against a gutter or downspout, otherwise it can easily break or bend.
  2. Use a large spoon or just your hand to remove leaves and twigs from your gutters.
  3. For caked-on dirt, spray some water to soften it and then use a gutter scoop or towel to remove. Be careful not to damage the gutter while cleaning up the dirt.
  4. Place a plastic trash bag or bucket on the roof or ladder to put the debris in it, as suggested by cleaners East Sheen. This way you will not have to go up and down the ladder constantly to get rid of the dirt.
  5. If the downspouts are clogged, place a garden hose in the opening and run water through them to unclog. If the water doesn’t help to unclog the downspout, use an unbent clothes hanger or a small plumber’s snake. Cleaners East Sheen advise to be gentle when trying to unclog downspouts, as they are not as strong as house drains.
  6. You can use a leaf blower to clean your gutters, but this is not always the best solution, as it can not only be awkward to carry this good-sized machine at high but it can also blind you with dust while cleaning.
  7. Once you have done with the cleaning, flush the gutters with water using the hose to remove any leftover debris and also to see if there are any leaks in the system.
