How to Clean an Oriental Rug

It is essential to have your oriental rugs professionally cleaned at least once a year, to keep their beauty and quality. Even, when your rugs have had a professional cleaning, it doesn’t mean that your should neglect them for the rest of the year. If your hand is covered in dirt when you rub it into the rug’s pile, then the rug definitely needs cleaning. You can either use professional cleaning services, such as carpet cleaning Clapham, or do it on your own by following the simple steps below:

  1. Get the following items: vacuum cleaner, rug beater, mild carpet shampoo, soft bristled brush, garden hose and a rubber window squeegee.
  2. Vacuum the both sides of your rug, then hang it outside to beat out any left dirt and dust using your rug beater.
  3. Place your oriental rug on a flat space, such as clean driveway or garage floor, for washing.
  4. Use a garden hose to soak the rug with cool water, then apply a small amount of your mild carpet shampoo to test the rug for colour fastness. If nothing wrong happens, use a soft, bristled brush to shampoo the entire rug from both sides.
  5. Gently brush the rug’s fringes using the soft brush and the cleaning solution. Repeat as many times as necessary until the fringes are clean.
  6. Wash the shampoo out of the oriental rug with a hose running cool water. Make sure you remove all shampoo, because the shampoo residue attracts dirt, speeding the contamination of the rug.
  7. Remove all excess water from the rug using a clean rubber window squeegee, then leave your oriental rug on a place where to dry completely.

Always use a rug shampoo that is specialized for oriental rugs. Cleaner Clapham advices to avoid using products containing strong chemicals or ammonia on your oriental rug, as they may cause permanent discolouration to your rug.
