Cambridge Area Museums

While the town is generally known for its academic output, many visitors to Cambridge are unaware of the many cultural offerings the city has. There are several notable institutions in the Academic city, and not all of them are research related. There is plenty to see and do, even for those without a specific interest in Cambridge University itself. Cambridge hotels are excellent sources of information for tourists who have never visited the area and hotels in Cambridge can be invaluable resources when deciding what to see and do while visiting.

Some of the Museums are related to the academic center, but certainly not all. Many of the better-stocked galleries are related to the institution however.

If your interest lies in natural history, there is an excellent museum related to the university called The Sedgewick Museum of Earth Sciences. Here one can learn about all of the discoveries made at the research centers on campus, and delve into the science that governs the natural world around us.

The Cambridge Museum of Zoology is a great place to go for those interested in the animal kingdom from an academic perspective, as well as those with a casual appreciation. Their collection rivals any you might find elsewhere. You will find exhibits showing some of the earliest documentation of the early botanists, and naturalists and the books they wrote to share their findings. You’ll also be able to view vast collections of sea life and fossil records of the earliest vertebrates.

Another fascinating place to visit is the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, or should I say would have been a fascinating place to visit. The museum has been closed for renovation until 2012.

So regardless you interest, the City of Cambridge has a museum for you. Cambridge hotels should have all the information you need to schedule and plan a museum excursion, and if you check with them first, hotels in Cambridge should be able to tell you of various museum openings and closing and possible operating hours.
