Benefits of Invisalign Compared to Braces

Crooked, uneven teeth or a maloccluded bite can cause significant dental health issues. Your teeth may be susceptible to decay, your gums may become irritated or inflamed and it may be more difficult to preserve good dental hygiene. Some individuals may suffer from bruxism, or grind their teeth, and others may experience shoulder pain, neck pain, jaw pain or headaches as a result of their misalignments or malocclusions. Orthodontic treatment can correct your alignment and improve your oral health.

If you and your orthodontist determine that orthodontic treatment is right for you, you may be able to choose between traditional braces and Invisalign. Factors that may ultimately play a role in your decision could include length of treatment, number of orthodontic visits, comfort of treatment, adaptability of treatment, expenses, permanence and results.

Traditional braces are considered highly effective for most mild, moderate and severe misalignments. Yet, the metal brackets and wires can be associated with mouth sores, pain and difficulty eating. The braces can also be difficult to clean around, which means that individuals who are wearing braces may be more vulnerable to tooth decay and gingivitis. Those who wear conventional braces may need to make considerable lifestyle changes during treatment and give up gum, nuts, popcorn, candy and other favorite foods and treats.

Invisalign is different. Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic aligners that are smooth and comfortable. The treatment plan is mapped out at your initial visit with your orthodontist, and you will replace each tray every two to three weeks, which means fewer visits to your orthodontist but more responsibility for your own treatment. The removable design allows you to continue eating all your favorite foods and snacks and continue keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy throughout treatment.

Treatment with Invisalign is subtle and private. The clear nature of the trays makes them practically invisible unlike metal braces, which can be unsightly. Many older teens and adults prefer Invisalign aligners for their discreet nature. The treatment procedure is also often faster than traditional braces because it can be so highly customized. Some people can have straighter, more even teeth in just about a year.

Invisalign aligners must be worn at least 20 to 22 hours a day, which means that if you are unwilling or unable to comply with your treatment plan, Invisalign may not be right for you. Invisalign may also not be suitable for younger teens or children who have not yet had all their adult teeth come out or for patients who have extensive bridgework or certain other types of restorations. If you are interested in Invisalign, your orthodontist can help you learn more or determine if you are a candidate.
