Baby Proofing your Televisions- A Simple Fix Can Save Lives

Recently in my local news there have been several heart breaking stories of children being crushed by falling televisions. This led me to do a little research on just how common this disastrous household accident is becoming. In an article from MSNBC in 2009 they site that nearly 17,000 children were rushed to emergency rooms in 2007, the last year for which complete figures were available, after heavy or unstable furniture fell over on them. The study, published in the journal Clinical Pediatrics by researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, found that such injuries had risen 41 percent since 1990.

One significant reason is the growing popularity of large flat screen televisions, along with the smaller entertainment centers that are less stable. According to the study, injuries from televisions alone accounted for nearly half of all injuries related to falling furniture during the study period – 47 percent.

Three-quarters of the victims of falling furniture are younger than 6 years old, and children that age “simply don’t recognize the danger of climbing on furniture,” said Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Parents must take the necessary steps to childproof these televisions in order to keep children safe. “It is imperative that parents take steps to secure flat-panel TVs, which have narrow centers of gravity, and other top-heavy pieces’, said Yvonne Holguin-Duran, a child safety specialist with University Health System in San Antonio, Texas.

There are several baby proofing products available to secure furniture, televisions and especially large flat screen TVs. Childproofing items such as furniture brackets and anti-tip furniture and television straps will secure your furniture and electronics to the wall and protect your children from being crushed. Please double check the furniture and electronics in your home and make sure your children don’t fall victim to this very preventable accident.
