Aviation Museum in Birmingham

While Birmingham is known for a lot of things, very few people know that the city hosts one of the most interesting flight museums in the entire country. This one in particular has in its collection, in addition to over 70 different types of flying machines of war; a set of hand crafted and highly detailed dioramas that tell the history of the events they portray. These fully detailed, hand crafted dioramas designed with scale models highlight the progress made in civil and military aviation, but they also tell the story of the people in involved in the scene the diorama portrays. Birmingham is proud of its historical traditions and your Birmingham hotel should be able to provide information on the museum, since most Birmingham hotels have racks of information on local attractions.

In the Korean War jets Exhibit, visitors will learn about the famous story of the defection of a North Korean Pilot Lt. No Kum Sok, during the Korean War. In this diorama you’ll find accurately represented scale models of two of the aircraft that faced each other over the theatre, the F-86 Sabre, and the MiG-15.

The Tuskegee Airmen exhibit was designed to honor the legendary flying team of the Tuskegee pilots and their contributions to the war. These men inspired and continue to inspire those that take the time to learn and understand the story in context. In this exhibit you’ll be able to study a number of WW-II era training aircraft such as the North American AT-6 Texas, a Vultee BT-13b Valiant and the Fairchild PT-19 Cornell.

IN late 2005, some 62 years after its fatal and fateful flight, the lake Murray B-25 was lifted from the waters of Lake Murray. The area was home to Bomb Island, where training missions were run. This particular craft had a fatal engine fire, causing its crash into the waters of the local lake. That craft is now on display as well.

Check with your Birmingham hotel to see if they sell or have access to Tickets in a package deal for local attractions. Many of the Birmingham hotels have exclusive arrangements with local area attractions, and you might get lucky with an affordable package.
