Alfreton Town – Small & Mighty

It’s been a tough start to the season for newly promoted Alfreton Town, who after promotion from the Conference North have struggled in the Blue Square Bet Premier, languishing second-from-bottom as we approach the half way point of the season. However, the Derbyshire outfit have since taken seven points out of a possible nine and have narrowed the points-gap between themselves and safety to just four.

Visiting the North Street Stadium, you really get the sense that Alfreton are a club performing above themselves. To be just one division away from the football league is a tremendous achievement for a town with a population of under eight thousand. However, though small Alfreton is a community that likes to do things well. With a picturesque station, up-market high street and one of the best hotels in Derby, maybe it’s so not surprising the football team look to rub shoulders with the relative big boys of the national conference.

This weekend Alfreton can forget the difficulties of the league and enjoy a cup game against Conference rivals Southport in the FA Trophy. Southport, mainstays at this level are riding high in fourth at the moment and will make form a considerable challenge at this stage of the competition. The Merseysiders, sit just six points behind leaders Wrexham will be definite favourites going into this match.

With the unusual nickname, “The Sandgrounders” Southport have a stadium nearly twice the size of Alfreton’s. Neighbouring the large Liverpool Airport Hotel, Haig Avenue has the feel of a football league stadium and highlights the disparity in size between the two sides. Although the cup is a great leveller and Southport won’t relish the thought of pitching up at the compact and partizan North Street.

Tomorrow’s match kicks off at the usual time of 3pm, although get there early to get a prime spot on the terracing to see what promises to be a hotly contested match.
